a bit of bark off

Hi, I don't understand what bark off means in the context quoted from newspaper:

"I'm fine,.. just a bit of bark off. That's all," he said.
The man in this text luckily survived after he crashed his motocycle into a truck on the highway.

    It means that his only injury was some minor scraping of his skin.

    He is comparing his skin to the bark on a tree.
