A bobbin and a spool

    I think both words mean basically the same thing. I hear spool more often than bobbin in references to cylinders or wheels that hold some sort of line, wire, thread, or rope.

    In the context of sewing, in American and Canadian English, you buy a spool of thread for sewing either by hand or by machine.

    A bobbin is part of a sewing machine. The thread is wound around the bobbin as around the spool above.
