Dear all
What’s meant by “ a bottle of glue” in the following context from “Manhattan Transfer” by John Dos Passos:
Time: 1910s
Joe O’Keefe has brought home the unhappy poor Joe Harland, once known as “Wall Street Wizard” to feed him.

"Hay there eat up strong. You aint eaten enough.”
“I cant eat very well…..Well I guess I’d better be going.”
“Naw stick around awhile, we’ll open a bottle of glue.”

I can't help on the meaning of "glue" - I'm assuming it's slang for an alcoholic drink of some kind. Gluhwein even? But I love the pun: stick around and glue!:D

I don't think he's opening the bottle of glue to sniff it. It sure stands for some alcoholic drink. Let's wait someone familiar with the slang.
