"a built-in function in recorders"
Does this sound good? Wouldn't it be better to say "a built-in function in a recorder" or "a recorder's built-in function"?

It sounds ok to me. Your second alternative is fine, perhaps better, but I don't like the first. "a built-in function in recorders" is more all-inclusive than the others.
