Hello everybody. I need some help with the following expression:

The text is about a rescue helicopter whose pilot is trying to rescue people from a boat. The sentence that I don't quite get goes like this:
"... In fact, a change in wind direction was to spare..."

I have no idea as to how to transalte the phrase in bold. Would you please help me?
    Thanks in advance.:)

TO SPARE: refrain from harming wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
