A close call

Spanish - Spain
I have some doubts when using this structure.

I mean, how can I use it?

He managed to win a close call?

He managed to win by a close call?

He managed to win close call?

I don't really like any of those, sorry.

    I'd suggest:
"He managed to win, but it was a close call."
"It was a close call, but he managed to win."

I agree with xqby. "It was a close call" is pretty much a fixed expression. I don't think you can use "close call" as if it were a regular noun.
