"As we crossed the lot (temple), the wind came up, whipping the pavilion and pulling the canvas taut with a crack of thunder." (The Foreigner, Francie Lin)

Here the protagonist and his companion are visiting a temple. Many rows of long tables are set up in the front courtyard under a pavilion, and people are making offerings.

By "with a crack of thunder", does the author mean that there was a real thunder, or that the canvas had made the thunder-like sound?
