A devastating bomb explosion

A devastating bomb explosion in the downtown area caused great damage.

Would it sound better if the underlined part is changed into "The explosion of a devastating bomb?" Thanks.

In the first version, it is the explosion that is modified by "devastating", which makes more sense than the second version which describes the bomb itself as devastating. If the bomb hadn't exploded it could have been described as "potentially devastating", but not actually devastating, so it's the fact that it explodes that causes the devastation.

Another way to say it, still keeping "devastating" linked to "explosion" is "The devastating explosion of a bomb in the downtown area caused great damage."

I think the first way you had it in your post is probably neater.
