Hello:
I do not understand this sentence. The context is one psychologist talking about guilt.
"Guilt is... a disgust at falling short of the ideal self-image."

    Or, to put it in more words, when you do something you consider to be wrong, you feel that you failed to reach that "ideal you" (the person you want to become). That's when you feel bad about it and about yourself.
