    Hello,

    Related to these threads:
    to spread jam on toast
The fire began in one room but quickly spread all over
The milk spread all over the floor

Hopefully this should be the last thread for me to understand the different types of spreading!

How would you say, "A drop of water fell on the cloth and spread to the size of a coin." Despite being a liquid, I'm thinking, based on the following reply,
that امتد would work here. Would انتشر also work?

وقعت قطرة ماء على النسيج فامتدت/فانتشرت حتى كانت مساحة سكة

    Thanks.

امتدت is good. انتشرت is bad :)

    What's مساحة سكة?

Thank you Barkoosh. I think I (almost) have a good understanding now. By the way, do you think انتشر would be used for a cloud spreading in MSA, as here:
مساحة I thought was area, and سِكّة a coin. We use سكة in Urdu borrowed from Arabic I think. Would مساحة عملة be better?

سكّة in Arabic is not the coin itself, it's what's called "coin die", "an engraved stamp used for impressing a design or figure upon some softer material, as in coining money". Of course, it has other meanings (railway; plowshare).

"Coin" is rendered قطعة نقديّة nowadays. So your sentence could be rendered:
وقعت قطرة ماء على النسيج فامتدت حتى صارت بمساحة قطعة نقدية

    Yes.
