a friend from afar

Chinese,Cantonese,Sichuan dialect

I was talking to Kris in English, he's Chinese. We practice twice a week. No Chinese at all.

I was telling him that I met friends online, they're in the UK or in the US. I said:

XX is a friend from afar. (Let's say XX is a native of the UK and now is in the UK.)

Thanks a lot

That’s not idiomatic. I might say, “Peter is a(n online) friend who lives in the UK” / “Peter is a(n online) friend who lives overseas”.
