a funeral for an acquaintance

Dear all,

I was away to attend the funeral for an acquaintance yesterday.

I made up the sentence. I guess the article should be "the," but is "a" funeral also fine?

    If the acquaintance had more than one funeral, you could use "a." Otherwise, "the" is correct. And I would say "...the funeral of an acquaintance..."
