Hello,

BEBailiff Pennyways. Here is 10 shillings and a further 10. This ends our association. You’re dismissed.
PennywaysI beg your pardon miss?

BE: Bathsheba Everdene
From Far from the Madding Crowd (2015)

Context: After BE gives Pennyways his wage, she fired him.

How can I understand “further” here? Can I replace it with “additional”? Perhaps “further” implies this is a compensation?

It sounds like the extra ten is intended as what we would call severance pay.

    sev·er·ance pay
    /ˈsev(ə)rəns,ˈsevərns pā/
    noun
    1. an amount paid to an employee upon dismissal or discharge from employment.
