A heart that kept, that went unchecked

Do you understand this phrase? : . “A heart that kept, that went unchecked,”
I seem to have difficulty with it. :( And, I thought that it might be:
A heart that would never love, but then loved randomly

From Carpenters single - solitaire

That doesn't sound familiar to me. I have checked a few different sites with Carpenters lyrics and they all say:

a heart that cared, that went unshared

Are you sure of the "kept / unchecked" rhyme?

I also checked lyrics and found both versions, but the recording does sound like:
a heart that cared, that went unshared - this also makes clear sense
    not
“A heart that kept, that went unchecked,”

This is an understandable transcribing error:

The way in which Karen sings 'cared' it is hard to distinguish the 'd' from a 't', and while I think 'unshared' is quite clear, it would be easy to mistake the 'sh' sound for a 'ch' sound.
