Is the locution "hearty thanks" considered singular or plural? Should it be "Hearty thanks for your welcome" or "A hearty thanks"?

I think I've heard the singular, but Google says "a hearty thanks" is nonexistent in its collection of books: hearty thanks * If Google's results reflect general trends in the language, it might be better to let this expression die. :)

Google's Ngram Viewer: hearty thanks/a hearty thanks
