A hostile levity

Most of the confidences were unsought – frequently I have feigned sleep, preoccupation, or a hostile levity when I realised by some unmistakable sign, that an intimate revelation was quivering on the horizon.

This is from The Great Gatsby - i'm finding it difficult to translate into French. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
