Do I need the indefinite article here: "Her films draw on (a) Japanese tradition"?

    It depends. If you're talking about Japanese tradition in general, then no. If you're talking about a specific Japanese tradition, then you need an article, but it would most likely be the definite article the and it would sound strange without anything to qualify it, e.g.

    Her films draw on the Japanese tradition of visual spectacle.
