A knock is as good as a boost

    It seems to be a proverb. If you search it in the book 'dark side of genius' (by Donald Spoto), you can see it at page 371. It has been used as a single sentence and I can not get meaning of it by sentences before and after it.
    What do you think about it?

    I think it means that sometimes "a knock /(knockback)" i.e. negative feedback / a set back / a rejection can end up giving you a boost i.e. be a source of encouragement / have a positive outcome.
