    “For(為……)”這後面要加一個“事件”,不能只加一個形容詞“late(遲的)”。
    漢語中,一個形容詞本身就代表一個狀態或一個動作,但在英語中是行不通的。
    如:他遲到。He is late. "Is late"就是“be late”,必須要有be。
    Be是verb,而verb在for後面表示一個“事件”時,需要用doing的形式。
    所以是for being late。

    另外,原句的翻譯本身也挺lame的。
    (英) He gave a lame excuse for being late.
    (譯) 他说了个站不住脚的理由解释他迟到的原因。
    簡潔點的翻譯:他為遲到找了個差勁的藉口。

    An excuse for _____.
    The only thing that fits here is a noun/gerund, but 'late' only functions as an adjective/adverb.

    An excuse for late.
    An excuse for being late.
    An excuse for my lateness.
    An excuse for late payments.
