With one or the other of us yawning theatrically before bed "a little beat", we had slid from having sex almost nightly to the American average of once a week.

What does a little beat mean here (it is quoted in original)? Is it as in a little beat-up, or a little bit (misspelled) or something else?

    Thanks!

This is AE for a bit tired or worn out.

I don't know. Maybe it is related to the fact that "beat" is also tired, exhausted (Slang).

If I understood it correctly, there is something wrong in the sentence you wrote. I think that having sex once a week is not an American average, but a married couples average.
