A little more below the surface

Senior Member
There is an American TV series and two friends are talking:

A: I think there's a secret reason why you put this game together
and why you're playing so hard. (Talking about a basketball match)

B: 'Cause I'm mad Morgan's dating someone else and I wanna embarrass him.

A: Okay. I thought it was gonna be a little more below the surface.

I have a hard time understanding "more below the surface" here.
Can someone explain please?

Thank you.

I think it means that he thought that what he was doing would be a little more subtle, a little less obvious.
