Are the following sentences both acceptable?

1. Fluorescent lamps have a long life compared with incandescent lamps.
2. Fluorescent lamps have a longer life compared with incandescent lamps.

    I believe "longer" eliminates the need for "compared"... so #1 sounds fine, but for #2 I would say Fluorescent lamps have a longer life than incandescent lamps.
