a lot of/many experiences

Hello Everyone,

I am updating my CV(resume). Last time a friend of mine, who is native English speaker, helped me out to correct my Enlish on my CV.

I just noticed that, on the part I explain about job history, I feel something is wrong.

"I gained a lot of management experiences."

I believe "a lot of" is not formal, and if I change to "many" it still doesn't sounds good. I changed to "great", I am not sure if this sounds natural for CV(Resume).

I appreciate anyone who tells me his/her impression for this usage.

Thank you:)

  • Hi Carrotcake,

I agree that "a lot of" is informal, generally. One more formal phrase that can be used instead of "a lot of" is "a great deal of."

"I gained a great deal of management experiences."

    P. S. Are you sure you want to use the plural "experiences"? In this case, the singular would be more natural.

Jack: I loved working for McDonald's. I learned so many valuable things.
John: Yeah, I know, I worked there, too. Lots of experience flipping burgers, and many lessons learned in how to get along with customers.
Jack: Yes, there were experiences galore!
John: Yes, a lot of people think that fast-food is just a dead-end job, but I shall share my myriad experiences with my kids some day.

Hi Joelline, .,, , cuchuflete, padredeocho,

Thank you so much for your posts.

I changed "a lot of" to "a great deal of" and "considerable".
I also changed experience as singlar as Joelline pointed out. I did not specify each experience, so I should use singlar.

    padredeocho,
Yes, I could use "a lot of" in conversation, but in this case, I need to use it in my resume, so I prefer using other terms.
What about in job interviews? Can we use "a lot of" in job interviews?

    Certainly.

Interviewer: What do you offer this company?
Interviewee: Well, I have lots of experience.

    FINE
