Hola!
Bueno, una vez una amiga le dijo a un chico:
"You are beautiful"
Y él dijo:
"Sweetheart, a man can't be beautiful".
¿Por qué dijo eso, tal vez no se utiliza "beautiful" para hombre?
Gracias por sus respuestas.

Actually, it is used for women. I have seen many handsome women, and heard many described as such. It's not so much an everyday expression, but it is definitely used.
    Saludos,

Ohh ok...I have never heard it or read it like that.

I have heard it too but not too often. I have heard it in a negative conotation as well. "She was not a handsome woman!" (as a more polite way to say she was ugly)

Usually if you call a boy or man "beautiful" as in "you are a beautiful boy" it sounds like you are talking about his character more than his looks. You are a beautiful person, you have a beautiful personality, you are wonderful! If you call a boy pretty, it implies that he looks feminine.

1.having an attractive, well-proportioned, and imposing appearance suggestive of health and strength; good-looking: a handsome man; a handsome woman.

I think of Catherine Zeta-Jones as a handsome woman, but Sarah Michelle Gellar is pretty.

In England handsome is used to describe women, and not just in a negative way.

Also beautiful may be used to describe males, but I would say more boys than men, eg: "Death in Venice".

    I can't agree more.
Beautiful, cute, pretty, good-looking, handsome and others would go for the outer look. The inside can be tagged as beautiful, or ugly, demonic and more. ;)

Yes, Jane Austen used it a lot.

"Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home..."
    From Emma.

"... for it is many months since I have considered her as one of the handsomest women of my acquaintance."
    From Pride and Prejudice.

"... a man can't be beautiful". Maybe it's not said. But I do find my beloved absolutely "beautiful" :D.

So, where is the difference betwen pretty, handsome and beautiful?
Handsome is more sweet I guess, than pretty?
And talking about men, you can say he is beautiful only talking about his personality?

    Priss,

Personally, I would say pretty is "sweeter" than handsome. In the definition I offered of handsome are the words "imposing appearance suggestive of health and strength." There's something in that, I think.

I agree completely with Tezza and Alexa. And I think many men are beautiful, and I could say that without having met them or knowing their personalities. I use pretty to describe men sometimes, too. It's not common, but I'm not the only one to do it. And it's not just about boys a la Merchant of Venice.

Usually "handsome" isn't used anymore to describe women. It's kind of outdated, but you will find it in older literature.
People call men "beautiful" all the time. It can be used to describe personality or looks, and it can mean "beautiful" in a feminine way, or just "attractive."
