a master of one's tools

I want to know exact meaning of "a master of his tools"(underlined) in the following sentences.
Thanks in advance.

Far from chaining the spirit to the body, I am asking that we give little children the essential knowledge that will, as they mature, free them from material life. They cannot escape the physical world by ignoring it. They can only climb above it when they have taken a firm grasp of its existence. Then they are indeed free, in the far deeper sense of a man who is a master of his tools and can do what he wished with them.
