A mesure que la vie lui échappe

Bonjour à tous!

I'm translating the description of a story, but am having trouble with this phrase:

My try: "As his life spirals out of control, the novelist’s emotions become more destructive..."

Is that correct? Or does it mean something more like, "As he feels his opportunities slipping away..."? Or even, "As he feels his life slipping away..." (which would imply that he is actually dying, of illness or injury?)

Thank you very much!
