A pencil rests against the wall/side of the cup

Hi, how would you describe the position of the pencil as shown in the picture below?

Or, perhaps along the same lines, the position of the cigarette below:

My guess would be something like:
A pencil rests against the wall/side of a cup.
A cigarette lies against the rim of an ashtray.

Would they sound natural to you? And could there perhaps be any other better ways to put it?

    A pencil rests against the side of a cup.
    Without the picture I might think that the pencil was outside the glass. Unless there were other objects in the glass I think anyone would know that "A pencil in a glass" would lean to the side.
    A cigarette lies against the rim of an ashtray.
    Likewise I think I'd say "There's a cigarette resting in an ashtray"

    If you really want to describe it you have to use a lot more words.

    I would say both are resting against a rim.

    There's a pencil inside a glass filled near to the top with water. The pencil extends beyond the top of the glass and is leaning against the rim of the glass at an angle.
