a peripheral application

Hi.

I take a Coursera course and they sent us this message on the first week:

We are delighted at the number of students who have enrolled on the MOOC and introduced themselves. As we predicated many of you are health professionals or will be when you have completed your training, so welcome. It’s also interesting that a good number of you have jobs in IT or engineering but see a peripheral application for population health.

I don't clearly get what that means. Does that mean IT workers and engineers are seeing some related applications (maybe on mobile phones and computers) to the population health are developed these days?

... a good number of you have jobs in IT or engineering but see an application for (a way to use or incorporate) population health in your primary field.

I believe "predicated" might be "predicted."
