"Other examples follow Dubai in shaping new islands into local and national symbols that are easily recognizable through the Google Earth–equipped laptops or smartphones of potential viewers, investors or consumers. A range of examples emerge here: a pearl island in Qatar; Russia’s Federation Island – in the geographic shape of Russia itself – at Sochi in the Black Sea; a wave-shaped island in Oman; one shaped like folded silk off Kuwait; crescent- and star-shaped islands off Karachi; and an elaborate archipelago of fish and crescent-shaped islands off Bahrain."

Does the phrase "a range of" refer to different geographies, or to different shapes, or to the both of them here?
