A river flows 'across' the valley. [along?]

A river flows across the valley.

I wonder how a river can flow across the valley. I think it is more sensible for a river to flow along the valley. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

There are rivers that wind their way through wide flood plains that could be said to flow across the valley, but I have to agree, you would need a picture to see if this description fits!
