in my book I have this explenation:

by a rough piece of work we mean work that is not yet finished, or is not complete

is that correct? could you give me some examples how to use it.

    "Work that is not yet finished" may be referred to as a rough draft, such as an essay or a drawing that someone wants to improve.

    In dressmaking, you could do a rough piece of work by making a dress from very cheap material. After making any necessary adjustments, the dress could then be made in the chosen (more expensive) fabric. Then the work would be complete.
