This novel is set in a Chinese village before World War One.
The protagonist Wang Lung lives with his father.
Today is the wedding day of Wang Lung.
He came to the very big house where his bride-to-be works as a maid.
Wang Lung goes into the house following the gate keeper.

A score of houses such as his whole house could have been put into it and have disappeared, so wide were the space, so high the roofs. Lifting his had in wonder to see the great cavern and painted became above him he stumbled upon the high threshold of the door and would have fallen except that the gateman caught his arm.
[The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck]
I'd like to know if the underlined sentence is the abbreviation of "A score of houses such as his whole house could have been put into it and have disappeared, because the space were so wide, and the roofs were so high," or that of "the space were so wide, and the roofs were so high that a score of houses such as his whole house could have been put into it and have disappeared."
Thank you in advance for your help.
