Hi,

I'm the autor of the sentence below:

According to media reports in March 2016, YYY and XXX reached a USD 30 million settlement with around 4,400 former miners who contracted / had contracted silicosis, a lung disease, while working underground.

Do I need the past perfect here? I think in this context: contracted while working... it is not needed, but maybe it is?

Do I need the past perfect here? Yes. It is essential.

The simple past gives the idea of "habitually contracted..." which is not the case.
