a side victory

Robert Green's horrendous error gifted the United States an equaliser and denied an unconvincing England side victory in their opening World Cup Group C match.

Could anyone tell me what is a "side victory". Does it mean a victory on England's side in this context?

    It divides differently:
    Robert Green's error denied victory.

The side it denied victory to was "an unconvincing England side."
So, yes, the sentence means that the error denied victory for England's side .
