a spoonful of honey - how much?

Senior Member

I know that the definition of 'spoonful' is as much as a spoon can hold.

But what kind of a spoon, a tablespoon or a teaspoon? :)

For example (the sentence is my own):

She always takes a spoonful of honey with her tea.

How much honey does she take?

I generally assume a teaspoon if I hear something like "a spoonful of honey". However, there's no solid reason for that assumption other than the notion that people often use teaspoons to put sweeteners in their tea. A "spoonful" could easily also refer to a tablespoon.

    Crossed with Edinburgher.
