Hola, i checked out "foothold" here and elsewhere and 'introducirse' or 'posición inicial' don't seem to fit....

How to say:

Tanto "lograr conseguir posición política" como "lograr establecerse políticamente" me suenan muy bien. Pero, ¿por qué siempre nos acobardamos ante el uso del sentido figurado? Es decir, en esta frase, "afirmar el pie políticamente."
