Hello

The sentence is this,
"For the first time since John Smith left, Jamestown has a take charge
leader in Lord De La Warr. No wonder there’s a state named after him."

What could be the meaning of "take" here?
It's a documentary about the beginning of America.
This Lord De La Varr rescues the people at Jamestown
and from the context it seems he is a proper leader.

Thanks
