A/the girl sitting in the hut

Hello,

I wonder if it's possible to use "a" in the following context:

... after wandering for two hours John saw a hut. He asked __ girl who was sitting in the hut:
"How far is it to the nearest town?"

The key gives "the".

Thank you.

I would prefer "a". In spoken English many people would use "the", but I think it's rather careless since (for one thing) it assumes that huts generally have girls siitting in them.
