Do I need any article in this sentence?
"He won (a/the) gold medal in 1978."
He won a gold medal in 1976. (If you want to be nonspecific.)
He won the gold medal in the triathlon in 1976. (If you want to mention the event.)
(There were no Olympics in 1978! )
So, use "the" if people already know which specific Olympic event or medal is being discussed.
