The quotation comes from Election Exit Polls Reveal a Starkly Divided Nation

Quotation: Most voters rejected one policy proposal Mr. Trump vowed to pursue from the beginning and never backed away from: building a wall on the southern border with Mexico. A majority opposed that plan. Seven in 10 said that most undocumented immigrants working in the United States should be offered a chance to apply for legal status.

Hi everyone! What's the difference if I rewrite "a majority" as "the majority"?

    No essential difference.
"A majority" is any number out of 6, 7, 8, 9. So "seven in 10" is one of them, thus "a".
"The majority" means any number from 6 to 9 taken "collectively".
