this is a sentence my colleague wrote based on Portugese media articles:

As reported in the news media, on November 5, 2015 two tailing dams operated by XYZ, a joint venture in which ABC and DEF own 50 per cent of shares each, burst and mudflow / a mudflow / the mudflow flooded the district of Bento Rodrigues in Minas Gerais state, Brazil.

We have never used the word mudflow before and would like to be sure how to use it here - is it uncountable? Does it need the?
