A/the slave owner

Greetings,

A slave owner considered his slaves to be his property.
The slave owner considered his slaves to be his property.

Context: it’s a generalization, not any specific person. I am talking about slave owners in general at a given time. Are both articles correct? I think so. “A” implies “any slave owner”. “The” implies a slave owner as a general concept and what applies to the concept applies to each slave owner individually.

Can you confirm that I can use either one, it’s up to me? I think “the” is just more academic, but I am OK with either one.

Thank you,
Maria
