Hi, I cannot understand the meaning of the red parts of the following of the sentences, from a English test. Would you please explain it to me. Thanks a lot.

A versatile wit, Noel Coward could elicit laughs in a variety of ways-- through his musical compositions, theater plays, and numerous acting roles.

Versatile appears in the WR dictionary. If you check the definition, you will see that through his musical compositions, theater plays, and numerous acting roles fulfils the definition.

Elicit laughs means to get laughs/to draw laughs/to bring about laughter.

A jack of all wit's, Noel Coward procured laughs in ingenious ways---whether through musical compositions, theater, or numerous acting roles.
