- I think "........a wide circle of acquaintances" is better, right?

    It depends on what you mean.

    If you want to say that he has a lot of acquaintances, and stress that they are of a lot of different types (e.g., old, young, rich, poor, male, female, different professions, different ethnicities, whatever), you would say that he has a 'wide range.'

    If you mostly want to say that he has a large number of acquaintances, you would say 'wide circle.'
