Accent/Dialect recognition (AE)

Hi Folks,

whenever I hear a native English speaking person,
I am wondering, where he/she might come from.

I am able to recognize British English (that certain accent;))
almost instantly and quite easily.
So I can actually distinguish by accent, whether it is British English
or American English. No big deal.;)
But I can't perceive the difference between the different
Accents and Dialects respectively in the United States.
How can you easily identify a person, who raised in, say,
North-East (New Jersey, Pennsylvania up to Maine) and
West Coast. And what about the middle part of the country?
Any tricks to identify the roots of a given person clearly?

Just out of curiosity

    Hi Voxy,

There have been dozens of threads about American accents, both in this forum and in Cultural Discussions.
The subject is far to large to address simply and concisely. I suggest you look at the other threads, which have
    links to specialized materials.

Excuse me my impulsivity, that hinders the most obvious thing.;)
Of course you may close that thread, if you like. ;)

EDIT: However, I just did my homework and learned plenty. Thanks.;)
