accident - occurrence?

I am writing about a company that has had a few fatal accidents at its operations recently. I do not want to repeat the word 'accident' too many times so, afterd describing the accidents, I wrote: 'Investigations have been launched into the causes of the most recent occurrences' - by 'occurrences' I meant 'accidents.' Is it OK to use the phrase here?

I think incidents or fatalities or deaths or casualties would all work better than occurrences. I think some might not prefer casualties because it is often associated with war. "Occurrences" sounds too much to me like an event that is apparently random in timing but not completely unexpected, like a solar eclipse.
