Please help me. this sentence is taken from "the Entertainer", a play written by John Osborne. could you please tell me what L. stands for?

He settles down. Across from L. comes a young girl. Billy pours himself out some more beer. the girl knocks on the door. He listens.
Who is it?

Thanks in advance.

I believe that a young girl is crossing the stage, starting from the left [=L] side.
People are very likely to use abbreviations in stage directions.
