Across the void

Hi everyone,
we are talking about the battle of Gettysburg.

Day three commenced with the largest artillery bombardment of the war, a barrage reportedly so loud it could be heard in Philadelphia and Baltimore. Starting from the present-day Virginia Memorial, Maj. Gen. George Pickett led 12,500 Confederate troops across the void. The Confederate troops got as far as the Angel, the Copse of Trees, and the High Water Mark on Cemetery Ridge before the attack was repulsed.

What does void mean here? Thank you.
