actions of a chicken

Senior Member
What do you call the acts wherein (1) the chicken scratches the soil (or the earth) to find a grain, and when she finds one, (2) she lowers her head to pick it up with her beak. I would like to know the correct noun and verb associated with the chicken. Thanks.

Scratch is an appropriate verb for the leg motion. Bad writing is often referred to as 'hen scratch', and it's named after the way a chicken scratches the ground. Lowering the head is often called pecking.
