    To engage [someone] [in something] = to hold the attention of [someone] [in something].

    To actively engage [someone] [in something] = to make positive efforts towards holding the attention of [someone] [in something].

    "actively" is largely emphatic - it implies that something more than "simply pointing out something that might be of interest" is done.
